Switzerland is a country that is one the most popular
destinations in Europe and offers a variety of holidays with its
combination of scenic alpine glaciers and stunning palm fringed mountain
lakes. It also offers tailor made rail holidays which provide dramatic
panoramic views of the mountains as you travel. Although officially
there are four languages spoken almost everyone speaks a little English
which is reassuring and in terms of value for money the costs are
very similar to ours. For those wishing to take short breaks there
are famous cities to choose from including Geneva and Zurich.
Bernese Oberland
This region is dominated by snow cladded peaks of the Jungfrau
at 4000m and its neighbours the Eiger and Monch and provides
one of the world’s most spectacular mountain views. Getting
there can be really exciting using the rack-railway to Jungfraujoch
the highest railway station in Europe or by cable car up to the
Schilthorn. This region has long been popular with British tourists
who find the picturesque Alpine villages and lakes bedecked with
flowers so attractive.
Interlaken is the most famous resort set between the lakes Thun
and Brienz and only ten miles from the Jungfrau Massif and provides
wonderful panoramic views of the mountains. In this town with its
traditional shops full of local handicrafts, Swiss chocolates and
jewelry there is always plenty too see and do. For the more active
this region caters especially for walkers and hikers wishing to
take advantage of the magnificent scenery. Other sports activities
that are available are Tennis, Biking, Golf and watersports such
as swimming, windsurfing, sailing and fishing. As previously stated
the town is situated between the lakes Thun and Brienz and for
those people wishing to enjoy a lazy or less hectic day then it
is very enjoyable to take a cruise on the lakes or if you prefer
take the funicular railway to one the higher points above the town.
Interlaken is the ideal centre for taking excursions and you can
choose any mode of transport albeit coach, rail, or steamer. Other
resorts in this region which offer superb facilities are Grindelwald,
Murren and Wengen all of which are well worth a visit.
