Spain is perhaps known for its crowded beaches and
hot sun in the south of the country and the popular Balearic Islands,
however, it has much more to offer. There are superb examples of
Moorish architecture, museums and music festivals. The major cities
of Madrid, Barcelona and Seville are among the most vibrant in Europe
and are excellent for fashion and nightlife. Spain is situated on
the Iberian Peninsular surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean
Sea and borders two countries, Portugal to the west and France in
the north. In the tourist areas and big cities holiday accommodation
is widely available, although it pays to book early in high season
to avoid disappointment.
Each region and major city in mainland Spain has something different
to offer the tourist. The climate in the north of the country is
generally cooler in contrast to the hot south. If you like trekking
and mountain walking then the Spanish Pyrenees in the north of
the country is worth a visit. In the North West is the rugged Basque
country dominated by the city of Bilbao which has been redeveloped
in recent years. The city of Barcelona capital of Catalonia is
popular for short breaks and is situated in the North West. In
the heart of Spain lies Madrid the capital, best known for its
art, nightlife and shopping. In the South of the country is Seville
which boasts famous monuments and a unique history.
For sun seekers and package holiday makers, the three Costa regions
in the east and south of east of Spain have much to offer, the
Costa Brava stretches some 145km from the French border. The Cost
Blanca lies between the towns of Gandia and Benidorm and boasts
some of the best beaches on this stretch of coast. In high season
hotel accommodation is sometimes scarce, however, there are hundreds
of campsites in the area. The coastline of the prosperous Costa
del Sol is situated in the south and stretches from Malaga to Gibraltar.
As you might expect the area boasts glorious sandy beaches and
endless choice of hotels and self catering holiday villas and apartments
to attract tourists.
In recent times Spain has undergone some huge changes in terms
of modern infrastructure and has hosted the Olympics, the world
fair and numerous other prestigious events. Despite this and the
fact that too many tourists Spain is full of crowded beaches, the
reality could not be further from the truth. In the countryside
there are many areas which have not changed for hundreds of years
and are ideal for those wishing to explore magnificent castles,
Moorish and Christian monuments and the diverse culture of the
real Spain. Tourist centres in these areas are often a great way
of finding suitable accommodation such as hotels, guesthouses,
self catering villas, apartments and farmhouses.
