Greece is a country with scores of islands and
land that begins in the Balkans and continues to the south Aegean
- an
extremely large distance for the traveller to cover. With many
historic sites of over four hundred years old, including The
Acropolis, a
holiday in Greece is an interesting experience which is not to
be missed. The coastline has many beaches and is deceptively
large mainly
because of the numerous inlets, and the proliferation of islands
range from the remote where vessels call twice a week, to resorts
as popular and diverse as any to be found in the Mediterranean.
Athens
This is the capital city of Greece and has many historic sites
to see spanning the centuries. The most famous is the Acropolis,
but there is also Mycenae, Olympia, Delphi and the Parthenon.
In addition, there are many interesting cafés and markets
for the tourists to appreciate and the main ferry port of Piraes
where you have a choice of the many cruises that are on offer
round the coastline.
Crete
The largest of the Greek islands in the south, Crete has
a diverse nature which will appeal to the tourist. Its coastline
varies between
small coves and long stretches of soft sand with warm seas.
Inland, you have the contrasting landscape of snow-capped mountains and lush green valleys.
Popular resorts include Hania, Rethymnon and Ayios Nikolaos and
these are well serviced by the tour operators.
Corfu
One of the most popular of the Greek islands and with more package hotels
and holiday accommodation than any other island. Its main attraction
are the endless stretches of golden sand mainly to be found on the south
and west coasts, and its thriving fishing villages, not ot mention
an abundance of water sport. Away from the beaches there are plenty of activities taking place
especially in the larger resorts, which come to
life at night with the sound of music coming from the cafes,
bars and tavernas.
Rhodes
An excellent island to visit which gets more sunshine than
any other Greek island. The east coast is lined with spectacular sandy
beaches
which makes it very popular with sun worshippers. Rhodes town is a
fascinating mixture
of a medieval walled city with an abundance of ancient
architecture, and a more cosmopolitan town with many modern
influences.
Kos
After Rhodes, this is the largest and one of the most popular islands
in the Dodecanese. It is the perfect place to discover the many examples
the fascinating history of Greece. The harbour in Kos used to be protected
by the castle of the Knights of St John and many of the streets
have delightful Italian style public buildings and minarets which
depict
the ancient tales of the Greeks and Romans. The island is very fertile and has wonderful scenery which
can be enjoyed without taking too long.
