Austria offers
a wide range of outdoor holiday activities for the tourist both winter
and summer holidays. There are also beautiful
cities to visit including Vienna and Salzburg, for those who are
seeking short city breaks. During the calendar year there are many
festivals covering music, film, opera, and dance balls. Austrian
boasts some of the best skiing resorts in the world for the avid
skier. If you are sunbather, Austria even offers lakeside beaches.
Austrian Cities
There are plenty of Austrian Cities to choose from for the tourist
seeking a short city break or those sightseeing or on day trip
excursions. Vienna is the Capital of Austria and is a favorite
destination for museum art and opera lovers. Salzburg, Mozart’s
birthplace is the second most visited city after Vienna. It is
perhaps best known for its musical associations and the film
The Sound of Music. Salzburg is also famous for its beautiful
ornate
buildings and closeness to the alps. The city of Innsbruck is
located high in the alps in western Austria and is close to many
top skiing
resorts, not surprisingly it is very popular with skiers taking
a break from the slopes. Bregenz is located in the far western
corner of Austria and compared to other cites it is relatively
small in size. However, it is situated on the eastern side of
lake constance and the surrounding forests which is popular for
camping.
There is also an old town, ideal for day trippers. Graz is the
second largest city in Austria and was the European City of Culture
in 2003. Many cultural events are hosted in the city between
June and September including streets festivals, contemporary
art and
theatre. Sited in the Danube Valley region of Austria is Linz.
For the short break tourist there are some interesting attractions
including the Ars Electronica Centre which is dedicated to new
technology and the Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz comtemporay art and
modern art museum.
Austrian Winter Holidays
Austria offers perhaps some of the best skiing resorts in the
world. Ski facilities are excellent and there are slopes to
suit all levels of abilities including experts, intermediates
and beginners. There are many famous ski resorts to choose
from such as Kitzbühel which is home to the world famous "Hahnenkamm" race.
Kitzbühel offers 145 km of piste and 58 lifts. Due to
its high altitude and good snow conditions the Arlberg area
is one of the most popular skiing area in Austria and extends
from Vorarlberg to Tyrolia. Other ski resorts to consider are
Hinterglemm and Saalbach in Salzburg, these offer lengthy ski
slopes in excess of 200km. It is worth knowing that most ski
resorts offer many other attractions including Apres Ski (special
events, food festivals and club activities) and nightlife.
Some ski resorts also offer snow boarding tuition, sleigh rides
and a wide range of outdoor activities.
